You may think that this is an easy decision and that the height of the house should dictate whether to use rental scaffolding or ladders, but it would be a mistake to jump to this conclusion without due consideration.
Most two-story home exteriors are painted with the use of extension ladders, primarily due to the cost of scaffolding rentals. However, there are times when you may want to consider additional costs, such as:
- When the surfaces to be painted require extensive preparation work or extensive burning before painting;
- When the terrain is sloping or covered with obstacles that represent a danger to the painter;
- When the building is in a position exposed to pedestrian traffic or indeed mechanized traffic.
In the last one above, you are no longer allowed to place a ladder on, say, a main street to make a window display without having someone at the bottom of the ladder at all times. Given the cost of having someone hold the ladder at all times, you may need to reconsider scaffolding rentals for these types of projects.
On larger homes where there has been paint coating, stucco painting, ornamental cornice painting or indentation, it is essential to use scaffolding on the project to ensure that the work is carried out safely and that the work is carried out with a highest standard. While on the surface the cost of scaffolding hire for a two storey house with a mid deck will set you back around £300, don’t be put off as you will get a far superior job with scaffolding. All painters know this because for them it is like working on the floor. Clearly, if the surfaces are better prepared and painted, they are likely to last another year or two before they need to be painted again. If you then recalculate the finances, you may find that, in fact, the use of scaffolding rental has put you in front.
Another point, of course, is that stairs bouncing around the front of buildings damage sills, scratch brick, and of course take a little edge off at every opportunity.
Using mobile towers to get the job done
There will always be times when scaffolding hire is too inconvenient to use, for example an upper story window installation or some repair job that is small but needs to be done safely.
The advantages of using a mobile tower over rental scaffolding is that it is lightweight aluminum and does not require much skill to assemble and stabilize for use. If the ground at the base level is reasonably flat, you also have the option of wheels to move your tower, which can be extremely useful in certain situations.
Scaffold rentals, work platform rentals, gate rentals and towers come in all shapes and sizes and are an excellent resource for enabling work to be carried out safely and generally to a standard. higher than traditional ladder rental. It is usually money well spent and as long as all health and safety aspects are met, it is as safe as working on the ground.
